Hypertension remains one of the most prevalent non-communicable diseases worldwide, contributing to high morbidity and mortality rates. Effective management of hypertension requires not only appropriate medical treatment but also comprehensive nursing care. Nurses play a crucial role in hypertension management by educating patients, monitoring treatment adherence, and providing lifestyle counseling.
Continuous nursing education (CNE) is essential in ensuring that nurses remain updated on best practices in hypertension management. With the evolving landscape of healthcare, continuous education helps nurses stay informed about new treatment guidelines, patient counseling techniques, and technological advancements in blood pressure monitoring. Research has shown that nurses who participate in ongoing education programs are better equipped to manage hypertensive patients effectively.
Despite the importance of CNE, many healthcare institutions in Nigeria, including Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTHC), face challenges such as inadequate training opportunities, lack of funding, and resistance to professional development. Investigating the effect of CNE on hypertension management in OAUTHC will provide valuable insights into how continuous learning impacts patient care and health outcomes.
Hypertension is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease in Nigeria, and its management relies heavily on nurses’ ability to educate and support patients. However, gaps in nursing knowledge and outdated practices can hinder effective hypertension control. Continuous nursing education is a potential solution, yet its impact on hypertension management in OAUTHC has not been sufficiently examined.
Without proper training, nurses may struggle to provide evidence-based care, leading to inadequate blood pressure control and increased complications among hypertensive patients. Assessing the role of CNE in improving hypertension management will help identify strategies for enhancing nursing competence and patient outcomes.
This study will focus on nurses working in Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, and their participation in continuous nursing education programs. It will assess how ongoing training influences hypertension management and patient outcomes. Limitations may include variations in nurses’ access to educational resources and differences in institutional policies regarding professional development.
